What Is an Interactive Demo? A Plain Guide for SaaS Teams
An interactive demo lets buyers click through your real product at their own pace. Learn how it works, where it fits, and what makes a good one.

An interactive demo is a clickable version of a product flow. Instead of watching someone else use your software, the viewer moves through the steps themselves: they click the button, open the menu, and see what happens next. Each step is a captured screen with guidance on top, such as a hotspot that points to the next action or a short tooltip that explains why it matters.
For SaaS teams, that difference is the whole point. A viewer who takes each action stays more engaged than one who is only watching, and a prospect who can explore on their own schedule does not need to book a call just to see the product.
How an interactive demo works
Most interactive demo tools follow the same basic pattern. You record a flow once in your real product, the tool turns that recording into steps, and you edit those steps before sharing a link or embedding the demo on a page.
Record. A browser extension captures each click, scroll, and page change as you use your product normally.
Edit. You add hotspots and tooltips, blur anything sensitive, zoom into small details, and fix text that has changed since recording.
Share. You publish the demo as a link, embed it on your website or help center, or export it as a video.
Measure. Analytics show how many people opened the demo, how far they got, and where they stopped.
In nVariant, the Chrome extension recorder handles the first step and the demo editor covers the second. Recording takes minutes, which leaves most of your time for the part that matters: deciding what the viewer should notice at each step.
Interactive demos compared with other formats
An interactive demo sits between a video and a live product trial. It does not replace either one, but it solves problems both of them have.
Compared with a video, the viewer controls the pace and takes each action, so nobody has to scrub back to find a moment they missed.
Compared with a free trial, there is no signup, no empty account, and no setup. The viewer sees the product with realistic data from the first screen.
Compared with a live demo call, it works at any hour for every visitor, while your team saves live time for buyers who are ready to talk.

Where teams use interactive demos
Marketing
A product tour on the homepage or a feature page shows visitors the product before they are asked for anything. Many teams place a short lead form partway through, so the first steps stay open and interested visitors identify themselves. See how this works for marketing teams.
Sales
Reps send a demo after a call so the champion can share it with colleagues who were not in the room. Trackable links show when the demo was opened and how far viewers got. More in the sales playbook.
Presales
Solution engineers record the standard demo once, then tailor text, logos, and branches for each prospect instead of rebuilding a demo environment for every meeting. See presales.
Customer success and support
Onboarding walkthroughs and how-to demos in a help center let customers learn a task by doing it. The same recording can become a written, step by step guide for people who prefer to read.
What makes a good interactive demo
A good demo is short, focused on one outcome, and honest about what the product does. A few habits make a large difference.
Start with the result. Open on the screen that shows the value, then show how to get there.
Keep it tight. Aim for one job per demo. If a flow needs more than a dozen steps, split it into chapters.
Write tooltips for a first-time viewer. Use plain language and say why the step matters, not only what to click.
Protect real data. Blur or replace names, emails, and numbers before you share anything outside the company.
End with one clear next step, such as starting a trial or booking a call.
How to get started
Pick the flow that buyers ask about most, record it, and publish it where those buyers already are. After a week, check the analytics to see where viewers stop and tighten that step. Our guide on how to create an interactive product demo walks through each stage in detail.
